Geoffrey Millett Greaves had originally enlisted in the Royal Canadian Dragoons at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, Canada, 28th September 1914. He was born in Mackworth, Derbyshire, on the 12th July 1881. Next of kin was stated to be Harold Frederick Greaves of 9, Greenbank Road, Birkenhead, Cheshire. He stated his occupation as soldier, and had seen previous service for 3 years with the 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters, 3 years and 9 months with the South African Constabulary and 2 years with Royston's Horse. He was 6 foot 4 inches tall, fair complexion, dark blue eyes and auburn hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He had an old bullet wound on the front of his left thigh running across to the right groin.
